so i'm studying an access course with dimensions training solutions but i think all the 'study skills' units (the ungraded ones) are the same for everyone who does their access course through distance learning.

i have just got to unit 5 where i have to write a report on whether social media is an addiction. i don't even know where to start as we've been given 0 information on this and all research has to be done by us. it's hard for me to actually focus on this as i have no interest in it (i'm on the science access course, just let me learn about science god dammit!!) has anyone else had to do this and how did you go about doing the research? i'm meant to come up with a survey and everything and i just don't know where to start as it's not like i've been learning about social media

This is why its in study skills. Its asking you to develop yours so you can carry out the task efficiently, juts like you will be asked in future.

Start with a plan and ideas.

What is it asking you to do?

What areas would that requie you to look at, issues to cover and questions to answer to provide a competent response to the question?

Thats he basis of your research.

Do he research through reading up on the subject. Articles, textbooks etc. There should be plenty of articles and you have to identify good ones that answers your above questions. Sort put the relevant ones and understand the information and arguments.

Make an essay/ report plan and order your thoughts. How do you wish to tell the reader what you have found and your opinion/ findings?

Write it, read it and then amend as needed.

Its the same skills if it was a scientific report, except more opinion. You still need to set out what you are going to do, investigate, organise information and write it up.

You have the internet. Access to loads of information on social media and addiction. They are asking you to find it and present it in a readable and meaningful format.

Maybe consider looking at the neurological response to social media and addictions in general. Not my area of expertise at all, but I am reasonably sure there is plenty of info showing that social media(or gaming, porn etc) can elicit a dopamine response, as do many addictive drugs.

Perhaps also think about behavior? Addicts generally exhibit at least some common traits - is there something to think about here? Is there a similarity between someone craving social media validation and an alcoholic craving a drink? What would an addict do to get what they need? Lie? Cheat? Abuse others? Some people make a living out of lying on social media - they claim things that aren't true and lie their fan-base etc, others abuse an bully using social media. There are loads of comparisons out there.

I think the jury is out there stating that social media is addictive the same way that pretty much anything can be addictive. It depends on the individual I guess. Your job is to make the argument either for or against.

For the survey, maybe ask how many hours per week do you use social media? How many types of social media? If no one found out, would you lie for more likes/thumbs-up/subscribers etc?

Not to state the obvious, but if you are writing an essay, try to find at least a couple academic reports(there are loads - I just looked) to cite in your own report.

I am not a massive fan of social media and I would have been annoyed if I would have to write a report during my science access course, but it actually seems like an interesting topic and certainly there is plenty to write about.

    Good luck!
