A step to dealing with my mental state Watch

    After contemplating ways to dealing with my mental health for over a year now I now know I can't do it on my own.

    Tomorrow I'll hopefully be visiting my local hospital but I'm unsure how to go about this. Do I just walk in and ask someone at the reception for my GP to book an appointment? I'm confused. I'll be going by myself (and happy to) so I want to know exactly what to do and not look stupid or have any doubts leading up to the time going there.

    Sorry if I sound so clueless.. I'll be looking on official NHS websites anyways too for info but just thought I might get some personal accounts of others experience here to make it seem less daunting.

    I had to go on my own, because my Mum was working. My local GP thingy (forgotten the word) works in a way where you either get an appointment for WEEKS in advance, or you phone up in the morning and get what you're given. So I rang in the morning, they said "you can see Dr Whateverhisnamewas at 2pm", got the bus and went to the guy.

    What I would do is look up your local hospital - if they have a website they should have some info on how to book an appointment.

    I'd also like to say that it's great you're seeking help - that's a big step! I hope things get better for you good luck.

    Why are you going to your local hospital not GP practice? Are you registered at a GP practice? As anon#1 above has said, you usually just call up and make an appointment. Depending on your area you might have to wait some time, though some practices have walk-in sessions or same-day appointments. It might be an idea for you to ask the receptionist if there is a GP that has an interest or specialization in mental health and if you can see him/her, sometimes that is possible.

    I meant GP practice and not hospital, sorry.

    Does my GP immediately give me mental health asssistance or first diagnoses me then looks into getting me a mental health specialist?

    Would it be best to call them up first or go in and ask reception?

    Thank you for the reply and if you don't mind me asking, has getting help.. helped? Haha. Does it make it easier to cope? Are they there to give you advice or just listen? Sorry, I'm not sure how it works.

    Unless you're pretty seriously ill, it's unlikely he'll refer you to a mental health specialist. Although if you're under 18 you may get referred to CAMHS.

    At the first appointment he'll take a history, what's wrong how long for etc (you might want to think about this beforehand. maybe make some bulletpoint notes so you don't forget anything important) and may prescribe you antidepressants or refer you to therapy there and then. Therapy often has long waiting times however so for depression or anxiety drugs are more likely if you're over 18.

    I've just looked at CAMHS & their services seem more suited to children or younger people under the age of 14 and I've heard quite a few negative rumours about them. Do you know of any alternatives if there are some?

    Okay, so I would call up first - most people book appointments via calling, and if you're unsure, they can explain the booking procedure (so if you called and they don't have any available appointments, they can explain when the best time to call would be and how long you'll have to wait).

    As for the second question... well, it depends what you mean by help. When I went to the GP he assigned me to EMERGE, which is part of CAMHS but for 16-19 year olds, I think? This was back in January, when I was 16. My therapist is called Andy, who's a decent guy. But let's put it this way - my sessions have been really far apart. My first one was in mid March, and I had one at the start of May and another mid June - then not another one til October. It probably depends where you are, but the wait times between each sessions can be pretty long. Andy himself, he's really decent and I think my sessions are positive and very good for me, but so far, since we've only had 4 sessions all year and the distance between each of them, we've not made much progress. I'm still depressed. So short term, definitely, long term, not so much.

    I wouldn't let that put you off, though. Like I said, short term it's been great. And my area may have completely different wait times to yours. We are working towards a better place, but slowly. It is ALWAYS worth reaching out and getting help, and if it doesn't work out for you, it's worth going back to the GP and exploring other options. It's much better than suffering alone! Having someone you can talk to about really personal stuff as well is really refreshing.

    Thank you so much for this! The spaces between your sessions are quite far apart but I wouldn't want mine to be regular anyways.
