    Meanwhile the Americans next week will offer us the satanfest that is Halloween. What is with the white trash aversion towards ceremonial prestige, cooking and non secular tradition? Why are white celebrations frequently so lumpen and stodgy?

      Halloween isn't secular, it has pagan origins. It isn't an American tradition, the Americans only added the stupid 'trick or treat' thing.

      But yeah, the answer to your second question (and I agree with you) is Christianity. The old pagan festivals were more in line with what you have in other cultures.
