atmosphere is nice, and service is friendly, if one doesn't want queues then shop online

Sure, the atmosphere's nice and the service is friendly when there aren't queues, which is practically never. And I'd like to see the porters' faces when an Ocado van rolls up...

We seem to be going off topic here or is it just me?

Hi there,

I applied for 2008 entry for Computer Science at a number of Universities, all of which I got offers for except for Oxford.

However, due to my rejection from Oxford and my worries that I don't have the sort of mind appropriate for my course, I've been thinking of taking a Gap Year and changing. It's not mainly because of the Oxford rejection, but that does play a small part. I'm very much an all rounder at school, I don't specialize in any particular subject, and whilst this got me great grades at GCSE, it's also really annoying because the mathematical minds of my school know exactly what to apply for. I was browsing the Cambridge site and stumbled across Land Economy. I thought it was a farming degree when I first saw it, but it seems really interesting, due to the fact that it combines so many aspects. I have a Mathematical mind (otherwise I wouldn't have applied for Computer Science), but I'm also logical, hard working, and vocal with an ability for argument. I would like to use all sides of my character rather than just maths/logic, so this is why Land Economy appeals to me.

And of course I have a few questions about it. Firstly, is there a huge open choice as to what you go into after your degree? What do most people go into? Secondly, would Maths, Music Tech, Chemistry, and French do the trick in terms of A-Levels (predicted AAAA). Thirdly, what sort of things look good on your personal statement (work experience etc)? And what would you get asked at interview? Also for your other Uni choices, I'm thinking of putting Land Economy down for Cambridge, but Law for the other ones. Do you think it's easy to write a personal statement for this subject considering it is offered nowhere else? I don't want to be in a hole where I don't get any offers at all because I'm not talking enough about Law. What other subjects do people put down as a support for the degree at Cambridge?

Finally, is it slated as a degree - do people take the piss out of it? I mean, I was before I found out it actually looked really interesting. Is it hard/easy to get in for? Are there any current students here who can supply me with any feedback about it?

Sorry about all the questions, but I think it would help lots if anybody was kind enough to explain just a few to me?

Thanks

Well i didnt no what land economy untill i read this thread, tbh i read the thread title and started to giggle because even the name sounds jokes. But i actually checked it out on the cambridge website and it seems really interesting, but you have to rember that alot of how they describe the course is advertising, i mean for oxford the prospectus says all the colleges seem to have the biggest reputation for being the most informal and friendly, so id say take anything u read with a pinch of salt. Btw have u ever considered PPE as it is the subject for the well-rounders, i mean half the first year economics and philosophy sylabii are maths, then then you have the scientific and empirical analysis of poltiics and economics, aswell as all the philosophy in it.

Definitely just you.

Re: the last post, I have a feeling the reason the OP didn't look at PPE was because he was originally rejected from Oxford - though of course it's not the only place that provides it, and I could well be wrong.

Atmosphere?! It's a SUPERMARKET.

[And not a particularly super one at that]

I disagree, it's great!

You go there how many times a week? ^o)
Lidka
And I'd like to see the porters' faces when an Ocado van rolls up...

That supermarket is hopeless. With the time queueing and fighting through the crowd in there, cycling out to Tesco is almost easier

I would if I had a bicycle :frown:

Heh, borrow mine any time :p:

99% of the time when it comes to it and I decide whether to walk or bother to go unlock my bike and find out if the tires still have any air in them I just cba and walk instead. Illogical, I know. But cycling in Cambridge is no fun anyway. Off-road is great, with a good bike, but on-road is just...effort for no reward. Even if you are slightly less likely to end up upside-down in a hedge in the city

/offtopic. Sorry. I'll stop stealing your thread now shadowsintherain.

What I was going to say is, I might be able to pass on the e-mails of some current LE students I know if you're really interested in the subject and want to ask them anything.

That's precisely how I feel, which is why I didn't bring one. As it is, only two of my supervisors are 20mins walk. All other supervisions and lectures are 5mins walk. Sainsburies 8.. I'll have the odd lecture in Sedgewick at some point I suppose as I'm for Politics, but hardly enough of those to bother with a bike..and that's only 15-20mins.

Lol being in Homerton I wouldn't be able to cope without a bike! Only have one suprvision per week but if I chose to walk it would be aboot 40 minutes I finks.

Does Land Economy include history in the course? This is a 2007/8 thread and now closed.
