Seen as naive and a bit stupid/too young by Birling and gerald. He lies a lot during the start of the play, and is only one who has technically committed a crime. He uses a 'quick fix' (stealing money, offering to marry Eva, etc) without thinking pout the concequences. Although hes an alcoholic and a theif, he is one of the only characters who admits they've done something morally wrong.
