I need to write an essay which explores how family is represented in scenes 1-5 of the play. Can anybody who knows the text help me out with what I could talk about? I'm not really sure how to go about it because family isn't really a theme we've ever discussed in class.

A good approach when you have to deal with an unfamiliar theme is just to think about how many topics come under the umbrella of that theme (so with family it could be relations between siblings, between parent and child etc.). What I immediately thought of here is the dynamics between Blanche and Stella, especially given how Blanche talks to Stella as if the latter were much younger, but you could also talk about their dead parents (Blanche's long outburst in Scene One is full of things to analyse concerning their parents) and even Stella and Stanley's future family.
