In the periodic table non metals and metals are divided. This question is asking me explain this division in terms of atomic structures of the elements? Do I talk about protons, electrons?

You either talk about the group (vertical - they tell you the no. of electrons in the outer shell e.g. group 2 has elements with 2 electrons in outer shell etc.) or the periods, which are the horizontal row. The atomic number increases across each period.

Mention about how they have differing number of shells, and different numbers of electrons on their outer shell. You could also talk about how non metals form covalent bonds with each other, metallic bonds form between metals and ionic bonds form between metals and non metals. Do not talk about protons as this is irrelevant, as if the proton number changes so does the element.
