Why do you think female political candidates would stress their masculine traits such as toughness? What do u think they are trying to prove and why is is important in such a male dominated political system??? I need people's opinions for my EPQ

Probably because they see it as the only way to survive in that sector. Generally, society portrays women as weak, they feel women are indecisive and don't feel they have leadership qualities. When thinking of the traits of strength, confidence etc, most people feel those traits are stereotypically male traits. For years, society has seen women as weak, fragile, meek etc, hence women politicians feel the need to stress the 'masculine straits such as toughness'. It's exactly that though isn't it? Yourself viewed 'toughness' as a 'masculine trait'. People don't see these traits associated with women. Being a politician or an MP is a position where you lead. You need to have confidence etc. You need to win the votes of many, so you need to prove to many that you can lead, hence women feel they need to prove that they are not weak. They need to break stereotypes in order to secure a role.

Maybe they are tough... Just because generally men are tougher doesn't mean tough women don't exist. It's likely that those who choose to pursue and succeed in politics are tough themselves and are simply stressing their own traits.
