The international rankings on QS and the THE both use surveys of academics around the world as the main metric.

Oxbridge and LSE. Maybe 1 or two others on a good day from UoL but that's it.

Most cities with football teams that are global brands will also have universities that are internationally recognised.

Recognition doesn’t mean a university is good or that it will suit you.

    Depends on the course

This isn't particularly relevant if you intend to practice law overseas (your other threads make clear that law is the subject you are applying for). It will be much more important if you have qualified here (but want to then practice overseas):
    (a) where you did your training contract and whether that is a firm that the overseas firm has heard of; and
    (b) whether the firm is reputable in your specialist field; and
    (c) whether the overseas firm has a need for a specialist of your particular skills and experience at that particular time.

I went from the UK to New Zealand to practice. The firms I interviewed with weren't remotely bothered about where I had been to university: it was where I had done my training that got me through the door, plus the fact that so many Kiwis and Aussies come over here between the years of 2 and 10 years PQE, that they have a huge candidate gap at the lower qualifications level.

Oxbridge are by far the most internationally recognised.
LSE, Imperial, UCL are also well recognised.
As is Kings, although to a slightly lesser extent. London is top other than Oxbridge.
Durham/St Andrews are q well recognised...
