Treat past papers like a mini exam. Revise for the topics before hand, and then do the past papers. When you check the answers it can give you an idea of which areas need improvement before the real thing.

I did lots of past papers when i did my media exam back in January and got a distinction (A). I made sure to mark it and improve my grade afterwards with a red pen and continue to revise the topics i didn't get correct by using mind maps and flashcards. Unfortuently i can't use past papers for my gcse exams next year but i would really recommend it if you are on an old spec as they are the best revision method in my opinion.
