Explaining to parents about my depression Watch

    So I want to explain to my parents about feeling depressed but I want to explain it to them in a way that doesn't make it sound so serious- basically make it sound like a physical illness but still a mental illness aswell. So if anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks.

    how would you describe it? i could maybe help you say it in a less serious way but firstly i’d need to know what you want to say/get across to them.

    don’t overthink it though! they will probably just want to help and it’s better to talk to them as soon as you can

    Thanks for taking the time to reply. I would describe it as sort of a continuous cycle with ups and downs. For example, for 2 weeks I could be depressed where I experience crying spells and suicidal thoughts then for the next 1 to 2 weeks I could be normal before feeling depressed again the next week. It also affects my concentration so I may miss lessons at school.

    The cycles sound a lot more like bipolar, to be honest.

    Don't be TOO quick to label. Ups and downs are normal for all people (particularly during teenage years). If it's severe you may be suffering from bipolar disorder, AKA manic depression.

    I'd probably just say to them that you're feeling really down lately and don't know what to do about it, in order to spark the conversation. That to me would feel like a non-awkward way to get into it.

    We live in 2017 and in relatively enlightened times in terms of mental health. Your parents should be supportive although may get a bit upset and blame themselves initially. However people can get depressed even if on the surface they have a stable home, a good life etc. It could be a chemical imbalance and there is treatment out there like antidepressants.

    Failing that talk to a teacher/form tutor/school nurse etc.
