It doesnt.
It is a worthless placebo.
Studies from the National Institutes of Health and from University of Exeter have proved that

Those studies have proven that it's a placebo, not that it doesn't work. With something like anxiety, a placebo CAN work, that's the whole point. So long as the person believes in it enough.

Don't take St. John's Wort if you're taking anti-depressants.

The OP said they'd come off them already, but this is a very good point. I believe also that even if you've come off antidepressants you are supposed to wait until they're out of your system before you start taking St. John's Wort (and vice versa). If you only quit the ADs a few days ago I'd speak to a doctor before you even try St. John's Wort - something like Kalms/Rescue is probably your best bet, and you won't know if it'll work for you until you try it.

Kalms work for me. Also, breathing exercises - I do in for 7, hold for 7, out for 7. That way, you have to focus so hard on your counting that it doesn't let your thoughts wander. They're best for when you're actually panicking about something though, if it's general and constant anxiety it's less effective.
If you can get to sleep, i would just suggest trying to sleep for as much as possible until you can get to the doctors, if it's that bad. I find it a brilliant way to pass time when I'm really struggling:s-smilie:
Or, more simple..if you're at home, do you have any comforting books - the type you've read a hundred times over and still love? If so, just curl up in bed with a hot drink and your book, and allow yourself to relax into the book.
I've had a lot of practise at this, and these are the ones which work best for me.

Bach Rescue Remedy helps slightly, in my opinion.

thank you!you just jogged my memory, before i was on medication i used to watch a film with a hot drink in bed and just go to sleep or tidy my room thoroughly and reorganise everything to take my mind off things thanks:smile:

Glad I could help
hope you feel better soon.

Kalms for me never worked at all, St Johns Wort did but could'nt handle the side effects plu it will take a few weeks to kick in so ny then you would have seen the doc.
I found taking a B-Vitamin Complex helps for stress & anxiety.
Which anti-depressant do you take for your anxiety?

Thought to have mild SSRI + mild MAOI effects

I've had a few events which have caused me to be anxious but seemed to have gotten it under control by eating well, doing 20mins of light cardo exercise a day, developing decent sleep pattern and taking kalms when i feel v anxious. It actually worked. When ever you think of the source of your anxiety, just say stop in your mind. Should help to develop a thought pattern.

Yeah but sometimes if you take these things with positive thinking then it actually does help as your brain believes that the anxiety will be relieved. So it can work.

Yeah but it still works then. So the studies are partly wrong if they say it doesn't work at all.

I don't know much about anxiety, but I know about a few things.

Rescue remedies- might have been proven to be a placebo, but the point of a placebo is that it makes someone feel better, right?:-) (Anyway, I find they help me a lot)

Lavender is good for general relaxation, its meant to be a good aromatherapy technique for depression as well. Try getting some essential oil, you can put a couple of drops on your pillow (not too close to your nose, cause it'll be strong haha) or maybe have a bath with some, it should help you relax. Then you can use it the next day and have associations of being relaxed at home. At the very least its a nice smell ^.^

I agree with the breathing exercises, and you can also try meditation, or visualizing. Meditation is (generally, I think) trying to empty your mind, but even if you don't do that it is relaxing. A good visualization is (with your eyes closed in a quiet space, try to relax as much as pssible) to imagine yourself in a beautiful surrounding. It could be on a mountaintop, in a jungle, by a waterfall, in a park- natural is better. Just imagine yourself walking in this space, seeing trees etc. Nice before you go to bed/in bed, cause you dream of nice places:-D

I hope you feel okay! and hopefully some of everybody's suggestions will help...

valerian from holland and barrett or boots you can get during the day tabs and one to help you sleep (bear in mind though that this can make you feel groggy in the morning) the day time tabs are great to the edge of things so that you can think more clearer and more rational. I mysefl have also given up chocolate and have seen a big difference

Just a general thing that makes me feel calm, light some nice scented candles and listen to sounds of nature with all the lights off. Relieves stress quite well. God, I sound like a hippy.

Edit: I just realised how old this thread was.

Why the hell do you keep bumping old threads? This is like the forth time you've done it.
