So this week our flatmate decided to drop out of University as he decided that it just wasn't for him. We live in Uni Halls and his room is now empty and we are wondering if/when they will find a replacement. Will they find someone as soon as possible for the room or will they wait until the next term.

It depends if there's someone who wants to change rooms.

Probably asap so they’re not losing out on too much money

It's entirely up to him. I suspect if someone wants the room, they'll move in asap. Every week is another week your friend has to continue paying for a tenancy which he isn't using. It's in his interest to sell it asap.

The vast majority of unis place the responsibility for finding a replacement tenant on the person who left and they will have to continue paying the rent.

Its up to them to find someone and presumably they will be trying as hard as they can. Sooner they do then the sooner they can be let off payments. Ask your ex flatmate. Its harder to find someone now, but not impossible.
