Never knew you could do maths at uni without further maths
depends what Uni you apply to. Oxbridge probably wants it but other unis like Leeds or Nottingham etc it isn't a necessity

I was supposed to post yesterday but I knocked out at midnight. I had done an economics essay for my teacher because i'm trying to get her to predict me a B and not a C ( "thought you wanted an A*?"... I never said I was good at it, or that I liked it for that matter) I also did some tweaking to my persona statement, then researched over my fifth option for Uni because I'm still a tad undecided. My dad and I watched a film, Before I Fall, and I was left upset because I like happy endings. And now i'm upset again. Sigh. Anyways it's Sunday and I'm doing my notes on Greek Kore (female sculptures) I'll post again later today

Hiii sorry to interrupt your thread buuuut Cardiff is my No. 1 fave so I have a couple of questions if you don't mind me asking? (sorry abi for using your thread lol)

    1. Are/were you in Halls, and if so what is the transition from living at home to living in Cardiff's halls like? Is everyone nice, did you have any issues, were they sorted in the end, is it loud... etc etc?

    2. If you're a bit of a party goer what is the nightlife like there? I've heard it's pretty good seeing as it is a capital city but whats your opinion?

    3. In your first year, how did you balance your academic to social life?

That will be all.. for now

And Abi, sounds like stuff is going good for you (except the maths ( ), hope you're not too stressed out!

    1. I'd already left home before so it wasn't that shocking, although my flatmates so far have been pretty awful, loud and demeaning - avoid Colum Road/Court (and Senghenydd) if you can. I've seen the other accommodations though and they're very good, especially the Talybont North complex :yep:

    2. I'm not a partygoer myself but there's no denying Cardiff has good nightlife - there are 2 major nightclubs along one road As for the drinking scene, Cardiff is incredible if that's your thing

    3. This is my first year, and I'm afraid to disappoint you but since I'm trying to transfer to another university, I don't have a social life currently

What I will say though is that if you can integrate it into your studying schedule it works best - e.g., do work for a couple hours, then go out with a friend of something, come back for another couple hours, go for a walk etc - just split your revising into chunks and socialise in the meantime

Thank you so much!! You’ve been so helpful.

If I may ask, why are you looking to transfer Uni’s?

Also, in what sense are your flatmates awful and demeaning?

Anytime, just ask if you wanna know anything else!

    For many reasons.
    - Firstly because the teaching in the School of Biosciences have generally been awful (I literally can't understand most of my Chemistry lecturers' accents)
    - Because they changed my course's content so that it's no longer accredited and everything is optional (which I don't like; they do options bizarrely here where it's first come first served, but you can only "come first" if your surname is in the first half of the register. Mine is R, so...)
    - Cardiff as a place is nice but socially, very, very heavily reliant on clubbing - I'm not a clubber, really.
    - Some inclusivity problems (I'm Irish, which has gotten me a fair share of "are you in the IRA" etc comments I've laughed off, but not really enjoyed)
    - I wanted to specialise in Genetics, which I now have to go to another university to do since they discontinued the Anatomy and Genetics programs.

I could go on. If you're not planning on doing Bioscience, Chemistry or Medicine you're fine, the Law school is apparently really good, and I've heard high praise for the Arts subjects as well.

As for the flatmates, I'm the youngest one in the house so they tend to make me do the work or treat me like a child (I'm 20!), as well as having this habit of just switching to their foreign languages when I walk in. I've complained to the university, but they're notoriously slow to do anything really.

I don't want to put you off of this university if it's your first choice, I just don't see any value in lying when there are elements much worse than they seem on first glance. Some of these are my problems, some of these are the university being an uncoordinated mess in some places.

Thank you so much for your honesty. I am, for better or for worse, a party goer so I think it’s quite good that there’s a clubbing reliant social scene. I will be in the School of Mathematics if I get in which I haven’t heard any problems about so far (feel free to enlighten me!) so hopefully I can sweep past all the drama you seem to be having. I also think your housemate situation is rather specific to you (apart from the Uni being slow in dealing with it) so that hasn’t really put me off. Thank you for all your help!

I actually can't praise the School of Math enough, they're amazing (I got a C in GCSE Maths TWICE, and they still managed to get me to 60% with enough support )

ALRIGHT hello, still alive, barely breathing (asthma). Lets just go through Friday to today because boy oh boy am i a WRECK.
    Fri:
I had to go to the Pharmacists for a prescription.. obviously. I was also awaiting the results of an economics test I took to raise my predicted grades. Bearing in mind I have taken around four tests to rise this grade, and im aiming for an A* in the final exam. My prediction was a C. In the other tests I have gotten D's and I was going insane.
    Guess what grade I got?
    D
AGAIN. now im just vex because WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME??????? honestly what is wrong with me and this subject that I hate so dearly. and next thing you know, I am bawling my eyes out in the Pharmacy. Like BAWLING. Like snot and all kind of bawling. Yeah.
Long story short my mother sorted it out for me and I'm going to be predicted a B thank jesus, thats all I wanted. I cried again when I found out it was gonna be raised. I just want to forget all about that. And Pharmacy woman, if youre out there, I didn't appreciate you rolling your eyes at me while I was STRUGGLING TO BREATHE (ironic because I was there for an inhaler)

Sat: I did quite a bit of work. I sentoff my application for reference reading, so I am waiting for an appointment now. My teacher loved my personal statement, no adjustments! (he always sends back applications) so im really happy.

That leads us to today. Today was fine. I just wanna send in my application. Sigh.

I don't know if it helps, but even if they predict you poorly and you end up getting an A*, you can use something called "Adjustment" to switch to a better university, or apply the following year and have a v good position for reapplying

Lass I 100% feel you on the pharmacy thing, it seems to be like an unwritten law that medical professionals are just so done with their jobs at this point but it's not fair on you to be treated like it:/

It's good you're getting a B prediction tho. I'm not sure who's writing your reference but the personal statement, reference etc all play a factor so it's not just the prediction. Again I know you're not that fond on Cardiff but the Maths admissions literally don't consider predicted grades until the very end, so that's at least one uni that u don't need to be afraid about

Congrats on the statement tho! That's easily the hardest part to get right so if you're smashing it now you're gonna do gr88. I can imagine you wanna send it off (my reference is taking foreeeever as well) but from my A2 experience you're actually pretty far ahead (my school wouldn't send off til like Dec 15 or so)

Hope you can get some rest now tho!
