The question was give the electron configuration of an Ni 2+ ion. i would have thought it was 1s2 2s2 2p6 2s2 3p6 4s2 3d6 but apparently that's wrong. could someone help me and explain why and how to get to the correct answer?

Shouldn't it be 3d8 but no 4s2, because the 4s orbital is further away from the nucleus so those electrons will be lost before the 3d orbital when forming ions.

    So it'd be:

    1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d8

The normal configuration for an Ni would be 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 4s2 3d8 so when it is 2+ it loses 2 electrons. However the electrons are lost from the 4s before the 3d so the answer would actually be 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3d8.
