Thus, the classical literature quiz of the TSR Pub Quiz 2017 is concluded! :party2:

Many thanks to the players who participated in this quiz! :grouphugs: I hope you enjoyed it… or that at least some of you did.

Here are the answers, mentions, and any other comments about this quiz.

Question 1: What is Oscar Wilde’s most famous work?
What was supposed to be an easy starter question turned out to be unexpectedly tricky. Some people raised the point that there could be two answers. However, for the purpose of the quiz, I only accepted a single answer, which was his most famous work on the sites I checked (Goodreads and ranker.com).

To be honest, I was very tempted not to give ANYONE points. The reason is that the title of the book is The Picture of Dorian Gray, not The Picture of Dorian Grey. :fyi:

However, I decided to be relatively indulgent (this is a UK-based site, after all!) and give a point to the one person who got it right, but who used the British spelling.

    Congratulations to LibertySea! :clap2:

    2. In what novel does Fitzwilliam Darcy appear?
The answer was Pride and Prejudice. Most people got this one right, which is exactly what I intended when I put this question as the second one.

Congratulations to 04MR17, TeenPolyglot, Notnek, CatusStarbright, Franzen, LibertySea, Ryan CS, Kindred, y.u.mad.bro, and Ishan_2000! :clap2:

    3. What is Lolita’s real name in ‘Lolita’ by Vladimir Nabokov?
    The answer was Dolores.

No, Kindred, this was not meant to be a trick question! :toofunny:

Congratulations to TeenPolyglot, y.u.mad.bro, LibertySea, and Ryan CS! :clap2:

    4. What is George Eliot’s real name?
The answer was Mary Anne Evans.

Congratulations to y.u.mad.bro, TeenPolyglot, Ishan_2000, Ryan CS, CatusStarbright, sammychu00, and LibertySea!

    5. Who wrote ‘The Tartar Steppe’?
    The answer was Dino Buzzati.

I was not expecting so many people to know the answer. :gasp:

Congratulations to TeenPolyglot, CheeseIsVeg, LibertySea, Ryan CS, Ishan_2000, and sammychu00! :clap2:

    6. ‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.’ – What book is this quote from?
The answer was A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.

Congratulations to y.u.mad.bro, Notnek, LibertySea, Ryan CS, TeenPolyglot, Ishan_2000, CatusStarbright, and sammychu00! :clap2:

    7. Whose skull does Hamlet kiss?
Hamlet kissed (or touched, but my AS English Literature teacher taught us that it was interpreted as a kiss) Yorick’s skull. I was not expecting people to refer to him as ‘the/his jester’, but I accepted both the answers of Yorick and (the/his) jester because they are the same thing in this case.

Congratulations to TeenPolyglot, 04MR17, y.u.mad.bro, Notnek, Ryan CS, sammychu00, LibertySea, CatusStarbright, and starfab! :clap2:

    8. What circle of Hell is dedicated to heresy in Dante Alighieri’s Inferno (first part of The Divine Comedy)?
The answer was the Sixth Circle.

Congratulations to y.u.mad.bro, LibertySea, ryan, sammychu00, and TeenPolyglot! :clap2:

    9. What is the name of the ship Dracula travels on in ‘Dracula’ by Bram Stoker?
    The answer was Demeter.

Congratulations to TeenPolyglot, sammychu00, LibertySea, CheeseIsVeg, Ryan CS, Lemur14, Ishan_2000, and starfab! :clap2:

Question 10: After Apollodorus, who is the third person to give a speech in ‘The Symposium’ by Plato?
    The answer was Eryximachus.

I am surprised that anyone got this one right!

Congratulations to LibertySea, TeenPolyglot, and Sabertooth! :clap2:

Special shout-out to Kindred for her funny and snarky replies! :toofunny:

I got all excited when I saw "Classical literature quiz" come up on my feed. I did a class in Greek literature once and really enjoyed it then read around a bit, but I got so disappointed when I saw Oscar Wild as the first question! I kept checking back and was finally rewarded.

I am so sorry! I defined 'classical' as books that are seen as 'classics' nowadays. :getmecoat:
