What’s the worst car and why?

Daewoo Matiz. Tiny hideous looking car. Despite a tiny 999 cc petrol engine it costs over £200 a year road tax! High emissions and poor MPG. Boot is tiny barely space for a brief case.

Amazing you can get a huge Citroen C4 Picasso registered before 2017 and its only £20 a year road tax and far better MPG!

If you're looking for really bad cars try Lada, Austin Allegro, Yugo or Fiat127. Much much worse than any modern day cars.

    The Vauxhall Sintra.

It was so unsafe a crash test dummy was decapitated when the steering column flew off on impact.

Depends what exactly you mean by worst.

Overall I nominate the Ford Pinto. Its fuel tank had a problem meaning that an impact from the rear could cause a massive fireball. Ford could have fixed it, but they calculated that it would be cheaper to instead leave the fault and pay out when people burned to death. Other awful cars include the Yugo, Trabant and other similar old budget cars.

If you're looking for something more modern and sporty, I nominate the BMW M4 GTS as one of the worst recent releases. It's an M4 Coupe (sticker price just under £60k) with loads of stuff thrown out (including the rear seats). Then add a roll-cage, stupidly large rear wing and front splitter (which will scrape on speed bumps) and ricer-spec golden wheel rims. The suspension is made rock-hard, and the engine is given a bit of a boost to about 490 horsepower with a water-injection system. That's all fine, but this thing starts at £120k! That's an Audi R8 or a couple of grand short of a McLaren 540C! Both of these cars will probably beat the M4 GTS on the track and are far easier to live with. Horribly overpriced and looks daft in my opinion.

Not exactly apples to apples comparison.

When comparing should always compare within cars of similar age, size and price.

The Matiz was from a different era where cars generally emitted a lot more than they do now.

As for my pick of worst cars:-

    1) Anything made in the 1970s by British Leyland, chief among which were the Morris Marina, Austin Allegro, Austin Princess and Jaguar XJs.

    2) Anything from Korea that was built prior to 2000.

    3) All China made cars, current MGs included.
