Nine sailors from a nuclear missile submarine have been dismissed from the Royal Navy after failing drugs tests, the Ministry of Defence has said.

They had been serving aboard HMS Vigilant, which carries the Trident nuclear deterrent. The Daily Mail reported that the drug they had taken was cocaine. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon is understood to have ordered all UK submarine crews to be tested for drugs. He is said to have given First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Philip Jones a "roasting" over the incident.

The Royal Navy said it did not tolerate drugs misuse, adding: "Those found to have fallen short of our high standards face being discharged from service."

Earlier this month, the submarine's captain was also relieved of his command after an alleged "inappropriate relationship" with a member of his crew.

Well well well what do we have here? This is so embarrassing for the Navy, sailors using cocaine, the Captain getting naughty with the ladies under his command... Sigh

Nuclear subs crewed by loose druggies, what could possibly go wrong?

Not the finest moment for the senior service.

Apparently, one of the sailors paid a prostitute for sex & then stole the money back off of her - Lad

Bet the Navy is mortified especially as they are going to uncover more. Its the nuclear subs aspect that is worst.

They've got to hang around on the ocean floor in a cramped tin can for extended periods at a time. What else is there to do than doesn't involve a bit of coke or some bum fun?

Yes there are, that rule was over tuned a few years ago. Besides I think the Captain getting frisky with the sailor girls happened on some other vessel, not the submarine.

Still a sub, just not this one.

And anyway, this is, in a roundabout way, a good story. Or would you prefer them to not know they had sailors taking drugs? That they're being tested and reacted accordingly is good.

No matter what some people here like to think, the members of the armed forces are human and have the same human weaknesses anyone else does. Inevitably, some will be attracted by drinks, drugs, or any other vice. Sweeping it under the carpet doesn't help anyone, so let's find it and get rid of it.
