Have around 300 characters to cut out my statement. Was wondering if it's ok to change things like I am to I'm and I have to I've to hopefully cut out some characters easily without deleting content.

you could do, you can also look at how you've structured your sentences to see if you could cut down that way.

I had the same problem myself but my supervisor told me that short forms and well received in personal statements. I would suggest reviewing what you've written an try and shorten some sentences, maybe reword them slightly, especially if you repeat words. I was able to cut around 180 characters in doing so, altough I do still use a lot of "I"s but can't change anything there.

Best not to. Try go through the PS with different people and rearrange and shorten sentences- go through the PS sentence by sentence. Best to go through it with a perfectionist who will really pick on things.

Cut down on non-course related extra curricular activities? Often people spend too much space on those

You could, but you'd still need to explain what the abbreviations are. But as other people have said, it's best to cut down where your PS is too "word-y."
