Hiiii, I've picked maths, bio, chem and IT at AS. I am wondering if I should drop IT as i want to pursue a career in dentistry,medicine..etc. Also IT is A BTEC. I think I would get better grades if I could concentrate on three a levels but just in case i mess up on one i want a back up so i am not sure. Let me know your thoughts

    I would drop the BTEC

I'd say 3 good A level grades in biology, chemistry and maths will suffice for entry into medicine or dentistry. You don't need to worry too much about the IT. As far as a back up goes, if you work hard and focus on the 3 subjects you should be fine. I took 4 subjects at AS and decided to drop one as I thought 3 good grades are better than 4 average ones.

Are you able to swop BTEC IT for BTEC Applied Science? you would then have a practical general science element alongside your Maths, Chem and Bio

I know BTECs come under a lot of criticism but they reflect a different and very useful practical element in the mix alongside A levels that tend to be pure acadamia

If I'm right, I think A* BTEC is worth 56 UCAS points, not to be sniffed at as long as you can hit it at Top grade

    Good luck
