History nea civil rights historians!!!

Hi,
I'm currently in the process of my NEA for A level history.
I have chosen the question of;
''In the years 1865-1968, how important was the federal government in the advancement of african american civil rights?''
I am really struggling to find historians for my question, so if any of you did a similar question and remember any historians/books you looked at that would be
appropriate please let me know ASAP as the deadline is very soon.
