    So I've been sent data on the relative abundance of serotonin and tryptophan in human plasma but what does that mean in this context? I've been told its the relative level and that it's not really a level.

    Its going to be relative to another chemical in the plasma. For example, you may have a relative reading of two for serotonin, meanings you have twice as much serotonin as something else.
