Before I left for uni I worked full time in retail. I was asked if I wanted to come back for Christmas temp work, I agreed. Fast forward a couple of weeks after I had left and I received a p45, is this just because I'm only coming back for Christmas and I have to be taken off the books in the mean time or does this make it look like I'm not likely to be asked back?

If your contract has changed or you're going from a contract to temp work then yes you will have been taken off the books and hence the P45. Call them and follow up about the Christmas work to make sure you're still on their radar.

You get sent a P45 form whenever you finish a job - whether you are sacked, resign, retire or simply come to the end of your contract.
