withdrawing from sugar lol

hi,

this may sound stupid but my new years resolution was to gradually stop eating sugar.

i dont mean like just a whole spoon of raw sugar by the way!

this would sound relatively simple, however in 2007 my daily diet was

8am bottle of lucozade
835am packet of sour skittles
10am 2 refresher chew bars
1115 am pack of chewits
1230pm 2 chew bars
2pm bottle of coke
310pm sour skittles and a chuppa chops lolly
425 bottle of lucozade

then i would eat a normal tea.

this was really bad towards end of yr and it is genuinely what i would eat. i wasnt massively fat from it just my teeth were quite bad and if i missed a step i would have the worst headache ever.

However i have decided to change this yr to repair my teeth and it was a very bad habbit to have.

but i have done it for two days with only eating a sherbet lemon a day but have the worst headache that has been there all day and have absolute tiredness. it is making me want to eat sugar to stop it.

so has anyone got any ideas when the headaches will end and how to survive till then?

i do realise it was a rubbish eating pattern!

No idea when the headaches will end, but persevere; what you were eating before was not good for you at all, a lot worse than a few headaches for a few days will be.

i dont know much about the science behind it, but i assume that replacing those sugars with the sugar from fruit would be a relatively healthy approach to it. as well as eating some lower sugar foods. do you find it a problem eating other kinds of foods? or do you just eat like this out of habit?

Also if you eat "proper" meals, and cut down on snacking (brushing teeth inbetween meals) it will be much better for your teeth.

i hardly eat any food as i am like the fussiest person ever since i went to hospital as a child cos i didnt eat. i had some psychological fear of food which sounds stupid i know, but as result i find eating food difficult. but i probably have tried more new foods in last two days then all of last yr

I don't think it's your teeth you need to really worry about (though i'm sure it wasn't good for them): it's your general health. If you havn't got diabetes from that diet yet, then your lucky and should definately stop now.

I think your going to have to deal with some symptons whilst you cut down. Hopefully they won't last for too long.

Wow thats worse than me! :-O
I'd say eating sweet fruits as an alternative to sweets it helps!
Also I was reading in the newspaper how these kids bet their parents they could go a year without sweets and they did! they got £400 and started 2008 with sweets!

Try and do something like that with a friend to motivate yourself.

that was another of the things i was worried about, diabetes. thats why i really want to change now.

Stick with it Soph, my headaches stopped after about a week (I cut out white flour too at the same time though!). I now only eat sugar if it is below 5th on the list of ingredients and it works for me. When I was withdrawing I drank a lot of water and snacked on fruit. But persevere you're doing a good thing!

yeah, i think my friends would consider that a safe bet, cos i was the sweet queen. i may see if they will do that as i like a challenge.

the one thing that covers my sugar craving is dried mango bizzarely! its strangely addictive though and im sure the fructose is quit high cos its v sweet

You will probably have to wait to your body readjusts to the new diet
So a few weeks up to a month
Try eating bananas or something
Good source of energy

Reply 11

i think i may try bananas tommorow, cos my energy is very low at the mo and i need to do some revision... badly!

Reply 12

yeah it should help, you might want to try going to bed early to!!!!

The headaches will pass. In the meantime, try taking some ibuprofen or something like that (being sure to read the label).

you got a good dentist?

Reply 15

you remind me of me! :borat:

Reply 16

yeah i have taken some but the lethargy is still there which is annoying, i spose the only good thing about a high sugar diet is your always energetic, so it takes some getting used to

Reply 17

you remind me of me!
