yeah resist the urge!!

I know the feeling i used to eat 2 bars of chocolate a day at college but i gave it up for lent and kinda went off it, however its no christmas and im surrounded by it and so have eaten loads :frown: but come college im cutting down (it cost so much)

Just think of all the money you'll save!

Ha only had them once or twice!!

Withdraw SLOWLY! For now try cutting out one thing at a time and replacing it with something healthier, for example some fruit. After a week if things are going okay, cut out another thing with another replacement. It's not going to work if you try and get rid of it all at once!

Thats a lot of crap! I thought me havin a couple of cans of coke a day was bad!

My advice is to just keep going. Don't try and take on too much, you want to be able to relax and spend time as you would like.

I had a caffiene addiction from the start of the year until around October. It was disgusting, I would rely on bottles of Lucozade and cans of coke to get me through everyday. On average I must have been having 3-4 fizzy drinks a day. I went to the dentist in October and he told me that my teeth and gums were horrific, and all the sugar in my diet had been affecting them. After he cleaned them, put 4 fillings in, I decided to stop straight there.

When you cut something out, the headaches will last a while, but stick with it. You have to remind yourself why you're doing it, and how important it is to do it, because eventually you won't have to eat sugar to get an energy boost. That's what sugar does - it gets you in a vicious cycle, where you'll be needing a sugar fix to cure your tiredness. A person who doesn't have sugar of caffiene all the time won't feel the effects as much as someone who depends on it. If you cut it out, I'd say after a few days the headaches will be gone, and you'll be back to normal. It may take a week, it's different for everyone. Just stick with it, relax, drink water and eat fruits as snacks. Good luck.

i resisted the urge for skittles which is good. the problem is my house is full of sweets and choc from xmas plus none of my family have that much of a sugar thing and are all healthy so theres no one to eat it! its calling me!

im trying to drink more water as i never drank any before, i just forget to drink sometimes, its silly but i really do.

i hope it gets easier though.

Chuck everything in your house that is sweet out.

you have without doubt the worst diet ive ever heard. its suprising you arent dead with diabetes by now. first of all stop eating so the sweets and get proper food inside of you. the reason you feel tired is because sugar highs dont last long and once its over you have no fuel left. you need slow digesting carbs like oats n stuff.

i had some psychological fear of food which sounds stupid i know, but as result i find eating food difficult

I am the same. Because of this I can only eat certain foods, and find eating new foods very difficult. In my house, we eat the same meals every week.

Have you tried chocolate which is either for diabetics or which is half chocolate/half carob?

I went through a similar thing a few years ago where I was anxious about foods - and the only things I trusted were sweet things. Until last year I was eating loads of sweet things rather than main meals - but then I moved away and I guess naturally started trying new foods. It was only after a visit to the dentist that I cut out alot of my sugar intake. My teeth had always been bad - but they are fixed now and I want to keep them that way. Its hard when you are used to so much sugar and cutting down or stopping yourself eating sugar when you need it can be difficult. But its possible. I have a small limit of chocolate each day and at other times I eat things like bananas and fruit as a snack instead. I find the energy from them not as instant as chocolate - but it deffinatly keeps me full for longer. Try finidng some fruit that you enjoy eating - you can get some lovely sweet apples like golden delicious or granny smith (usually the green ones are sweeter) I also find that I like things with strong flavours and they generally help me not to crave other things. Try cubes of mature cheese with some biscuits - they can be really filling.

Anyway all the best!

You know it's a myth that eating loads of sugar causes diabetes...

You people do know that you don't get diabetes from eating too much sugar, right? It seems not.

Anyway, I think you really need a lot of work to get over your fear of food - you can't let something that happened as a child rule your diet for the rest of your life. Try some new things, you'll probably be surprised at just how much you DO like. Give it time and keep eating other (non-high-sugar) food - if you don't eat anything, you'll feel even more crappy.

i thought generally being overweight and not exercising caused diabetes. sugar is a good way to get overweight.

Yes, but it's the being overweight that causes diabetes, not the sugar itself. The OP hasn't mentioned her weight at all.

Have you tried snacking on those small bags of dried fruits? They're quite sweet naturally but better for you. There's a really nice one I think by Whitworths that has got dried cranberries in and coconut, I honestly think that dried cranberries are one of the nicest things ever! Maybe try drinking more water to help with the headaches. Good luck with it!

thanks everyone for all the help and support!

I am a size 12-14 so not ridiculously overweight and my weight has never dramatically changed when my sweet intake did. i think my bmi is normal.

the thing i am struggling with is water. do you know if squash is ok to drink? no added sugar!

and is fructose bad for teeth and health or ok?

i have only had dried mango and apricots. they are nice actually, so i may try some more dried fruits. i like them if they are a bit sour/bitter, are cranberries like that?
