i have only had dried mango and apricots. they are nice actually, so i may try some more dried fruits. i like them if they are a bit sour/bitter, are cranberries like that?

No cranberries aren't bitter, they're really sweet instead.I haven't had mango dried before but I have had apricots and they're nice. Papaya is good too, and dried apple although it doesn't taste of all that much!

thanks everyone for all the help and support!

I am a size 12-14 so not ridiculously overweight and my weight has never dramatically changed when my sweet intake did. i think my bmi is normal.

the thing i am struggling with is water. do you know if squash is ok to drink? no added sugar!

and is fructose bad for teeth and health or ok?

It's still not great for teeth but better than lots of processed sugar. Sugar-free squash won't hurt your teeth, but there are loads of additives and so on which aren't great for you. Plain water isn't that disgusting!

i have a bit of a dilema today, my friend and i are going to the cinema which is fine. however she was used to me eating sweets and i will feel awkward if i dont eat sweets in cinema. is there anything which you could recommend i eat in order to not make my friend feel uncomfortable with her eating sweets and me not?

Either some dried fruits or maybe salted popcorn or something? It's not great for you, but doesn't have too much sugar in it.

I get bad headaches and feeling overtired a lot when I rapidly change diet. With me it can take from a few days to about a week until I'm fine again.

I am also withdrawing from sugar as you say.. I want to lose a small bit of weight & think this will help. I do allow myself to have Rich Tea biscuits though. I've never been much of a sugar eater but I've had these feelings lately that it is very, very bad for you. Along with salt. It is very difficult though. But fruit helps.

hi,

i thought i would update you on my progress.

the headaches went after about a week, however i got more side effects. mainly really bad skin! i was one of those people that never had a spot, yet now i get spots all the time! its horrible but i heard it was my body expelling toxins?!?!? plus i got really bad toothache but it seems ok at the mo.

i have done much better than i thought though! i have slipped up abuot 3 times and the last 2 days havent been very good. but i no longer feel desperate for sugar any more!!! plus i have saved a few quid and ropped a dress size woo hoo!

how did the others that said they were giving up do?
thanks for everyones help btw!!

congrats

I've had less sugar since christmas, but now Im back home I've been going through large chocolate bars woops. At uni I cant really afford to buy much like that, so I stick to a couple biscuits a day, like those golden crunch ones. They're surprisingly good to eat in the last hour or so before going to bed when drunk

hi,

this may sound stupid but my new years resolution was to gradually stop eating sugar.

i dont mean like just a whole spoon of raw sugar by the way!

this would sound relatively simple, however in 2007 my daily diet was

8am bottle of lucozade
835am packet of sour skittles
10am 2 refresher chew bars
1115 am pack of chewits
1230pm 2 chew bars
2pm bottle of coke
310pm sour skittles and a chuppa chops lolly
425 bottle of lucozade

then i would eat a normal tea.

this was really bad towards end of yr and it is genuinely what i would eat. i wasnt massively fat from it just my teeth were quite bad and if i missed a step i would have the worst headache ever.

However i have decided to change this yr to repair my teeth and it was a very bad habbit to have.

but i have done it for two days with only eating a sherbet lemon a day but have the worst headache that has been there all day and have absolute tiredness. it is making me want to eat sugar to stop it.

so has anyone got any ideas when the headaches will end and how to survive till then?

i do realise it was a rubbish eating pattern!

With most addictions (and this certainly sounds like an addiction to me), it is better not to go cold turkey. One sherbet lemon is perhaps too little sugar to be having when you're used to having this much. I'm trying to cut down on sugar too (though I never ate as much as you), and I am finding it a lot easier physically and mentally to slowly reduce.

Also, have you considered getting a blood test? This level of sugar in the diet for a long period of time can cause diabetes.

^ shes already cut sugar out of her diet!

Well done SophieJR15! Hope the spots and toothache get better soon, and yea spots are the body's way of expelling toxins. Im planning to do something like this for lent because i eat way too much chocolate and drink 2 bottles of lucozade a day atm which isnt healthy, i determined to do it hopefully i'll lose some weight too.

That's really good that you managed to rid yourself of sugar.. or however else you want to put it. I've cut salt completely out of my diet but as of tomorrow sugar shall be the next thing. I can't believe you dropped a dress size!

Reply 51

i know, i was most pleased about the dress size shrinkage!! its amazing cos it gives you an incentive to really cut out sugar

I'm trying to stop snacking and instead, if Im hungry, make some pasta or something so that it actually fills me up, since Im at uni set meal times arent really in place so if I get up at 10, have a bit of toast, then maybe pasta for a late lunch and a baked tattie later I tend to not feel hungry in between times

Need to cut more salt out though, damn water retention. And also alcohol, but I enjoy it far too much...

Trust me: GO TO THE DENTIST ASAP.

I once had a really bad toothache, which I put up with for a few months, and it eventually disappeared. One day, my jaw went numb. The infection from the tooth had completely eaten through into the jaw and the swelling/abscess pressed on the nerve and I had to have an operation to sort it out...

Getting a filling seen to (which is hardly going to be a big shock considering what you were eating, if that's what it is) is a LOT better than putting it off - toothache only gets worse in the long run, believe me!!!
