Looking for accommodation for next year, is it likely we can get a 44 week contract as opposed to a 52 week?

Not totally impossible but highly unlikely. In some places you can pay half rent over the summer months providing the house is empty then.

virtually no landlords do this and the ones which do probably just charge 12 months rent over 9 months so you pay more - they have to cover the cost of 12 months somehow since no one will rent it in the summer
