I recently thanked someone for talking to/advising me. I have him as one of my Facebook '''friends'''.

He got back saying 'Pleased I could do so...'

What does 'Pleased I could do so' mean in this context? I mainly mean the formality of it - It sounds incredibly formal.

Why did he need to be so formal if he is my friend?

Overthinking is not good.

Your friend just said he is happy to help, and did so, in a polite way.

Nothing more, nothing less.
