Adjustment generally is not that great an option. Very few places are allocated via adjustment.
If you have you eyes on a "top university" apply there at the outset. Or if you really do surprise yourself and get A*A*A instead of (say) AAA then just take a gap year and apply to those "top universities" with grades achieved.
