Medical volunteering abroad-summer

I was just wondering if anyone had been/had any advice about volunteering in a medical environment abroad...
I'm half way through my medical degree and am looking to go away in the summer for about 6 weeks and would like to spend most of the time doing something medically-related... I have found a couple of internet sites offering extortionate packages... does anyone know of any other sites or have anything they could tell me from their/friends' experiences?
Thanks!

I'd love to do that too! I was looking around for even 2 weeks in France and I could not find anything in my price range. Twiglet, or if anyone comes up with something please let me know- I'll do likewise.
it's all a big con.... i mean you pay to volunteer :s: must be setting alarm bells off.... i'm not sure but depending on where you want to go adn what you want to be up to, you could contact some hospitals/projects over there and ask them directly? make sure you take more elective insurance though....

I volunteered as part of my elective for 8 weeks in sri lanka. It cost just under £2000 including flights. It is epensive but i had never travelled before and i was put with a wonderful host family withother volunteers. I only spent money cause i travelled around at the weekends.

That was with Teaching and Projects abroad.

This is the thing - paying to volunteer, doesn't really fit! Especially when you look at some websites and the prices are the same wherever you go, whatever you do - they must be making a lot of money somewhere!! Grr!!
there is stuff in hong kong, but it's not so exotic but i can help you out if ur interested in that.........
I did volunteering in both medical and non-medical related background with MADventurer.com in Ghana this summer. I'm an undergrad and it was good fun as well as I did a rural placement which meant taking history, diagnosing and I even administered an injection, considering i have no medical training it was good fun and really thinking of doing some teaching again this summer.

It is very very expensive. In the 3 weeks I was there it cost over 2.3k. Thats because I missed my return flight and had to buy a new ticket which cost £700+!!

If you want I can put you in touch with the nurse I was with. He such a fantastic guy and he will take very good care of you. He has made his own organization and im sure if you make a donation he'll take you. Madventurer send volunteers to him so it cuts the middle man. He's desperate for volunteers.

Well you said there is stuff in Hong Kong and you could help the other person out, so I was wondering if you could also point me to the information/website/whatever?

Okay, experience in the UK it is then! Or maybe I'll swim to France, take lots of bakedbeans and beg to work somewhere. That'll work, right?

Good luck, Twiglet!
yeah sorry for being thick about that, it's just that it took my a while to find out where the actual form was:

RE money: professional studies loan? If it's something that can 'further your career' HSBC or NatWest are more than willing to help with costs... I borrowed £2500 in November for 'living costs' pretty easily.

hey, im an undergrad and went to ghana for a month with teaching and projects abroad, was amazing!! you get the opportunity to teach in orphanages as well which i did, and also you can do something called medical outreach- going to villages and treating minor cuts and grazes of orphans- it was really amazing!!! the whole experience teaches you alot. there were three medical students doing the same thing while i was out there, and they all found it really useful!! alternatively, my sis went to india with tpa to do a medical placement for 3 months and absolutely loved it!!

oh ye it was just over £1000 for a month, i think three months might be around £1500 !?!?
