So I have been ringing up hospitals and midwifery bases and I keep getting told that I can’t do it because of the nature of the job, has anybody got any suggestions of work experience that I could get ?

Hi, it's worth looking at volunteering at breastfeeding support groups, NCT groups or mother and baby groups. Otherwise any experience in a healthcare setting would be beneficial, such as a general hospital ward or st John ambulance.
It's really a case of relating your experience to midwifery, including non-healthcare related experience.
If you are able to travel, you could see if a hospital further afield is able to have you for a shadowing day with a midwife. The hospital I used to volunteer at took volunteers in maternity so some hospitals do allow it. (It is popular though)
I hope is helps and good luck.
