I’ve never known how to handle this when all I want to talk about are interesting things going on around the world etc.

Some people probably don't know how to take it past small talk, you just need to open out to them by asking them questions about what they do and try to share stories with each other.

I’ve tried asking people questions. It’s been my go-to tool for years, I’ve often heard people like talking about themselves but it’s shocking how shallow I’ve found most people to be. Even simple questions about things like “what do you worry about?” get terrible responses like “not much”.

Good for them... But generally, I find people show a lack of any kind of awareness. Why do people live on this permanent autopilot?

Don't expect such deep conversations with people you're not close to.

I would say "interesting things going around the world" is small talk. You're talking about world news right? That stuff should come up easily in conversation

To be honest, I would find such a question about my worries to be quite personal, and would feel uncomfortable answering truthfully to anyone I'm not super close to. Better to start with small talk and ask questions about something they said, building up to the deep stuff
