    Hey everyone,

For the past 6 months or so I've been questioning the purpose of my existence, it's been a question I've asked myself on an almost daily basis.

I'm not upset, nor am I happy. I am quite emotionless in my day to day living. I spend money only on the essentials such as food and rent.

Due to my parent's divorce and my own unstable upbringing, I don't wish to get married, have kids and therefore risk my own potential offspring going through the same stuff. Also, the current world doesn't strike me as a particularly nice place to bring a child up. I get almost zero joy from things that many people seem to get joy from, that is, becoming drunk, watching TV, travelling, socialising and general spending money.

I feel like I don't fit in with the materialistic, consumer driven society that we live in.

I don't wish to work a meaningless job. I also don't want to work a job that many would call meaningful. I have become largely apathetic to society. Why should I care about a society that has so many issues when I largely don't partake in the society itself. It seems clear to me that many of society's current issues are rooted in the massive upheaval of traditions, politics and communites that have occurred since the second world war.

I don't feel upset. I feel completely apathetic to life and have done for a number of months. What does one in my position live for? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts. What do you live for?

Apologises for replying late. I just came across your thread. I do sometimes think exactly what your thinking. The world is corrupt and I was thinking the over day about if I really want to bring up a child into this horrible world. No one is safe. I feel that you are depressed. You are not alone. I would say to keep yourself busy so that you don't develop these negative symptoms. Find something that you enjoy; it doesn't have to be something big. e.g. watching anime/ cleaning or reading your favourite book. We have to survive. It will take time. Is there anything that you enjoy?

I live for God and my family. God keeps me alive.

I wish you all the best.
    Take care

Thanks for your message, I genuinely appreciate the effort take to respond.

I am feeling better now, your advice regarding keeping yourself busy is useful. As opposed to spending much of my day pondering the meaning of life I have attempted to focus on more 'immediate' and 'material' things, such as exercise. So thank you very much for the advice.

This may sound strange considering I have mentioned searching for the meaning of life, but I too do live for God. This is why I could never take my own life, how could I destroy something made in the image of God. Yet sometimes I feel like I don't know how to fulfill God's purpose or desire for us. I've largely managed to free myself from worldly desires such as lust, desire for power or money. I've considered entering the monastic or priestly a number of times, however, the urge for union with another human still lingers at the back of the mind.

May I ask, how do you live for God? Have you discerned what you believe God's purpose is for your life?

    All the best
