I want to work some extra hours but I read online that it can annoy managers, is this true? What should I say in a email?

Why not ask politely in person?

When you see your manager just let them know politely 'I'd love to work some extra hours so if you have any going or need any cover please let me know'. It's only annoying if you expect the answer to be yes or keep bugging them about more hours.

Let your co-workers know that you're able to cover their shifts if needed too
