    Hello everyone,

I just completed a BTEC in engineering at my local college about 1 year ago and now feel ready to start university. I'm currently trying to setup my UCAS application as an independent student and need to somehow obtain a reference.

I plan to e-mail a kind teacher at my old college to see if he would be willing to write one for me...the only problem is i'm not sure how exactly i should word the e-mail. For instance does it have to be very formal? Do i need to mention the courses and universities i'm applying to? Is there any other information i should tell him?

I'm quite clueless! any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    Dear *****

I'm planning to apply through UCAS for some ******** courses. I was wondering if you would be able to provide me with a reference.

Could you please let me know either way or if you need more information about my application.

    Thanks
