I want to get back to a friend I haven't spoken to like in 2 years (due to extreme circumstances) and get back to normal as it is extremely awkward.

Unless you parted on bad terms cant you just facebook or call or email them and say hi and ask if they want to hook up? If there was awkwardness just apologise. You dont really give enough detail.

Yea, I think just messaging the friend on Facebook messenger. If things ended poorly then just say you've been thinking and are hoping you two can put the past in the past that you've been thinking of that person and appreciate the friendship. Then perhaps meeting for coffee and a catchup.
