I know that with the 9-1 rollout there will
be a complete change in spec in all subjects. But are specs changed every so often anyway - e.g. examination methods or content?

Generally varies. It's interesting to see the comparison between changes to the national curriculum and changes of Government. Since the establishment of the National Curriculum in 1988 we've had 5 major reforms to it. And 6 different prime ministers. Education has become a political football.

Specifications won't really be created/updated unless it will run for 2 or 3 years minimum.

Edexcel A Level Maths for instance remained it it's roughly similar form for 12/13 years which is quite remarkable. Some reforms in that case were implemented in 2008/09 but largely consistent since 2005.:Yep:

AQA GCSE Geography on the other hand was a 2014 spec (earlier versions were similar though) and 9-1 teaching for GCSE Geography is now being taught. So only 3-4 years life in that one.
