Is applying to an ABB uni with BBB too high a risk? Does anyone have any success stories about getting accepted with lower grades specifically from russell group unis?

It's not too high of a risk at all, I mean of course there is the possibility of rejection and you should be prepared for that. In terms of lowered grades, they'll probably still give you the course offer for ABB, they won't reduce it to BBB - if so you'll still have to achieve those grades.

As long as your other choices are not all at the same level then it's a reasonable strategy.

Every year thousands of students miss their grades and are still accepted. Look here for examples from 2013-17: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/sho....php?t=2786463
