    What are your thoughts?

Do you understand what is meant by the term using equipment? That isn't, in my opinion, an especially helpful phrase.

My question remains, how could you use standard laboratory equipment and reagents and an IR machine to tell the difference between the three types of alcohol.

I know I'm just turning the Q back on you, but if I just tell you the answer, you will learn little. Figuring stuff out for yourself is much more effective.

What reactions of the three alcohols do you know? What information does an IR machine give you?
