    Hi,

I wish to apply to a postgraduate course and it states the following in the application form:

If you have studied in the last five years, then you must include a referee who is an academic familiar with your work.

If you are currently or have been recently employed, then the second referee should be your current/recent employer.

If you have not been recently employed, then the second referee should be another academic.

I graduated last year and am now in employment, so I would prefer my current employer to be unaware of the application. My previous employer was a Recruitment Agency for a few months so I don't feel that they could give me a strong reference.
I do however know that I can obtain two strong references from my previous lecturers who would be happy to provide them.Do you think the university I am applying to would mind if I put down two academic references and understand that I might be reluctant to have my employer as a referee? Any advice would be appreciated.

You should ask them directly whether it would be acceptable.
