Long story short, I had a rough childhood with a parent who was verbally abusive and threatened violence when they drank alcohol, so I ended up developing a kind of fear of alcohol. Now I'm in my first year at uni, and of course I'm around lots of people who enjoy drinking, but whenever someone around me starts drinking I get kind of panicky and want to get away from them. Does anyone have any advice on getting over this? Because I really want to go out with my flatmates/people on my course without being a nervous wreck.

what you're experiences sounds very understandable, and I'm sorry you're feeling like this. I would seek some form of support from your uni or GP, something along the lines of CBT counselling so you can try and overcome these negative thoughts.

Thanks for your response, I'm pretty sure my uni has a councilling service available so I'll see about getting in contact with them
