    1. The magical ancestry question is optional (or it's ok to lie to get an offer)

The magical ancestry question is compulsory - you must let Hogwarts know whether you're muggleborn, half-blood or pure blood. Our HAS systems run automatic revelo spells to check for lies so you must be honest.

This information isn't used as part of the decision making process and isn't revealed to the staff making the decision. We use this information to check for any bias in our offer making process.

    2. If you took OWLs in Muggle Studies and Herbology you have less chance of an offer than if you chose Arithmancy

Hogwarts will take your subjects into account when we deciding whether you get an offer or not but we don't have a "blacklist" of subjects or consider any OWL subject to be "soft". We take into account your entire application and how your background has prepared you for study with us.

For students from a pure blood background we are particularly keen to see Muggle Studies OWL when applying for any of our courses. We are a diverse campus and fostering greater understanding between muggle and magical communities is one of our aims.

3 You're guaranteed an offer if your parents promise to donate new brooms to the house quidditch team

Our admissions process is transparent and includes checks for bribery and corruption. Donations to Hogwarts or to individual house teams are welcome but we would have no problem with rejecting an applicant attempting to do this (after we have our 7 new Nimbus 3000s of course).

4 If you miss the deadline you can use a confundus charm to fool the HAS system into thinking you applied on time was on time?"

We use uncorruptible tempus charms to date stamp your application when we receive it. These are resistant to a range of charms and jinxes including the confundus charm.

5 If you know a Hogwarts ghost that will help you get in

Knowing a Hogwarts ghost wont help you get an offer or meet the terms of that offer. It would be helpful in getting you settled in and in navigating the castle (depending one which ghost it is you know).

Be wary of any assistance in your application (or in settling in) offered by Peeves.

6 You can become a mediwizard/witch at Hogwarts

Hogwarts does not teach mediwizardry - to become a mediwitch/wizard you need to apply using the MAS system to the apprenticeship scheme at St Mungos.

St Mungos do have a graduate entry apprentice scheme with accelerated study for graduates of our Herbology, Potions and Charms courses.

7 You can use a time-turner to go back and change your personal statement after submitting

As you know a time-turner can only be used to go back 5 hours at a time without the risk of serious harm to the traveller or time itself.

We would therefore urge our applicants to use their common sense before risking the temporal stability of the universe to correct a small typo.
