9 or 1?

It's ambiguous notation so it could be either.

The / should be a divide sign - it’s not on my keyboard.

I think that it's 9 because you have to divide before your multiply because of BIDMAS

Have you studied distributive law?

6/2(2+1)

9 because bidmas meaning 2+1=3 then 6/2=3 then finally 3*3=9

6÷2(2+1)6\div 2(2+1)

Most likely this would mean 6÷6=16\div 6 = 1

But it's ambiguous so it would get a big red cross if I saw it in a student's work.

This is the correct answer. If this was Facebook there would be a 1000 post debate about whether it is 1 or 9.

TSR is more sophisticated

Blimey, I’m just asking a question. I understand what you’re saying but unfortunately due to Apple not having the actual divide sign on their keyboard I had to put a dash instead.

These types of questions are posted again and again, not just on TSR. The answer should always be "Don't use ambiguous notation" but instead the threads will usually go on for 5 pages.

Of course you did nothing wrong by asking your question and I'm genuinely sorry if any of my replies sounded harsh. Please continue to post maths question in the maths forum

use BODMAS; this means brackets comes first, then division, then multiplication:

6/2(2+1)
=6/2(3)
=3(3)
=9
