I am hoping to get on to a veterinary course next year and just have a two questions regarding dissection for recent/current veterinary students.

Firstly, do they obtain the animals from the meat industry or are they donated by an alternate source, speciafically for scientific research?
Finally, what laws are enforced to ensure ethical treatment of animals used for this specific purpose?

Nothing is bred purely to be dissected, if that's what you mean. Cadavers come from a variety of sources, including donations from shelters etc after animals have had to be euthanised.

The laws will therefore be the same as those that govern the treatment of animals in all other circumstances. See the Animal Welfare Act for example.

The vet school I attend does use fresh cadavers but nothing is euthanised for dissection, they are picked up from a wide variety of shelters each week. We do dissect organs/cadavers of production animals but these are purchased from an abattoir and not killed specifically for our use.

As far as I'm aware ours come from pounds, and I would say 99% are greyhounds (racing industry left-overs). The large animal specimens come from the meat industry as far as I'm aware.
