Someone I have on Facebook who I used to go to school with wrote to me when I was feeling a bit lonely:

'I really hope that you realise how special and great fun you are man, such a gift to us all!'

Is this a nice message to receive? Do you think that this person considers me as a friend?

What do you think they mean by 'gift to us all'?

Also, how often do you need to speak to old friends from school/uni to remain friends?

The person is trying to make you realise that they've appreciated your presence in their life. As for speaking with old friends you just does causally like 'how are you?' 'How's life?' etc...

I'd cry tears of joy if I received a message like that!
