Hello, I just found out my uni offers the option to go abroad in second year and I looked at the universities associated then narrrowed them down to 3 I'd really like to go to as an year abroad of studying. Out of National University of Singapore (NUS), The University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology which one should I go for? Personally I was thinking Singapore but I want a second opinion

I’d say study at NUS. I live in Singapore and the country is great. Both Hong Kong and Singapore are very very similar but I think Singapore has a more western style as opposed to Hong Kong, which has a more Chinese vibe.

Also most people speak English in Singapore and I think Hong Kong mostly speaks Cantonese. So if you don’t speak Cantonese, Singapore is the only choice here.

Depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. All three are quality institutions and academically you can't go wrong with all 3.

HKU's campus is located more centrally in Hong Kong (MTR Island Line/Blue- Literally has a MTR station in the campus) compared to HKUST's campus so if you want to go out at night to Lan Kwai Fong or elsewhere HKU will be more convenient to facilitate that. Unless of course you are based in HKUST Business School which is literally near Central. HKUST's campus is more inconveniently located but if you don't particularly want to deal with the bustle of Hong Kong city centre itself all the time it's slightly more out of the way.

Personally, I would choose NUS because I don't like Hong Kong that much, and like Singapore a lot more.

    HKU. More vibrant city.

The ranking point. Engineering students at either HKU or NUS are going to be Oxbridge/Imperial standard. The rankings do not matter.

I studied abroad at NUS, personally I didn't like it very much. But, travel opportunities are the best in the world from S'pore and exams finish in December, so you have weeks to travel.

Hong Kong is an infinity more interesting city, and unlike Singapore, it has non-urban areas to escape to when you need a break from city life. Hong Kong's climate is better too. I couldn't live in Singapore with its near constant high humidity and 30+ degree heat, HK gets a reprieve in winter, at least. I would also argue that HKU is the better university, people in the UK will at least heard of it unlike NUS.

Thanks for the advice guys! After all responses I personally gravitate towards NUS but will still consider HKU. Still got plenty of time to decide
