If I can, I'll be taking driving lessons next year but I'm scared that even with the instructor by my side, I'll slip up, and fail castrophically by doing something like knocking a street lighting column over.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

Every one mucks up when learning to drive. Your instructor is trained to deal with common learner driver problems and can easily anticipate such issues and will intervene to stop things like "knocking a street like column over" by giving you advice/tips or if needed, utilize the dual controls.

Exercise some common sense with the driving everything will be A-OK.

Whats the worse that can happen. Your instructor will step in they wont let you do anything daft. Think of all the very old people driving around, if they can you can.
