    It all depends on your course really - if you're doing Design, you're going to need something a bit more powerful than if you're doing English for instance.
    We do have computer labs here to use, so it's not absolutely necessary to buy your own laptop, but many do to make life easier so you can study from your room.
    You could always e-mail the department you're applying to and they may be able to advise you.
