My friend is wanting to take maths, further maths and geography. I have told them they should have taken another subject due to them taking the two maths subjects. Am I right with my advice?

That depends on the course they would like to apply at University. If it is something Maths related e.g. a Maths Degree or Engineering then Further Maths would be a helpful A--Level to have. Otherwise, usually, Universities would see them as 2 whole separate A-Levels.

i don't understand what you're advising. if your friends knows what they wanna do then as long as their subject combo accommodates for it then they should be fine. if they don't know what they wanna do then as long as theyre keeping their options open with facilitating subjects then they should again be fine. your friend is clearly into maths so i see no qualms in them taking further maths to reinforce this. i'm taking sciences and english -- english being the contrasting subject but it's fine for the course I wanna do.

If he wants to do maths then that's cool. Or maths and geography (combined degree).

Further Maths looks pretty good on applications, just saying.

I have heard that some unis for some courses don't take maths and further maths as separate subjects.

This was an old Medical School thing, it's being phased out now.

For the most part, FM and Maths are considered seperate subjects. In fact, most maths applicants probably have something like FM, Maths and One other subject.

    It's honestly their choice.
