Hey thanks a lot, that's really useful. Are you applying for Broking in London?
Btw, what did you answer for the one about the interest rates and price of bonds?

That isn't the sort of thing you should be asking here. Do your own research and pull y socks up fast. If you don't know the answer to that question you will honestly get laughed out of the room in the interview stages!

Good Evening All,

this could be a very basic question with regards to the ICAP Assesment centre (electronic broking) but regarding the numerical reasoning SHL test, are you allowed to use a calculator?

Have never attended an assesment centre before and havent studied numeracy for a couple of years so depending on whether i can use a calculator or not will determine how i approach preparing for it!

Any help would be msot appreciated. If I can offer any assistance regarding my experience up until now, please do let me know.

Hi Achilles,
I was told that we are allowed to bring a calculator for the AC but this is for the spring insight, not sure if it is the same for what your applying for though!
Best advice I can give is to email the grad recruitment and ask?
Best of luck for your upcoming AC and hope you do well!

They provide you with pretty decent calculators but feel free to bring your own

I had an ICAP interview the other day and am through to the AC, they're very quick to reply! To be honest the interview was unlike any other I've had, for a start it was actually ICAP HR on the phone not some call centre, and the girl I spoke to would ask questions related to what I'd just said etc... it was actually like a proper conversation instead of just reading questions off a list in front of her! Obviously the discussion was steered towards certain topics but I thought I actually got something out of it and that they were genuinely interested in me. From what I can remember this is the gist of what I got asked.

Why ICAP?
Why Broking?
What exactly is ID broking and how does it differ to trading, what qualities/skills do you think make a successful broker?
How do you handle clients/what do you think this side of the role requires - specifically meeting them after work etc..?
Where else have you applied?
How is the market and specifically how is ICAP and other IDB's doing?
What do you think the future holds/future challenges for IDB's?
Tell me about a time you've made money (can be for yourself or for a company - thought this was tough, I mentioned something I working last summer that saved money for the business I was with)
Something about a difficult situation or persuading someone, can't remember exactly.

I got the impression they're not looking for perfect answers, more whether or not you can hold yourself in a phone conversation, obviously key to broking. I build up quite a good rapport with my interviewer talked about going to the pub etc... even thought she might have thought this was a good thing (shows I'm sociable)!!!

Any more q's PM me.

What did you say for the question 'Where else have you applied?'

Jut had the Icap business services interview
As this has been so helpful to me i will share what questions she asked!
Describe yourself in three words?
What research have you done to prepare for this?
what are ICaps 8 types of risk?
What is Icaps highest risk type and why?
what will you bring to the business services division?
using examples from your skills and exeriences can you say what is required in the business services division and why it will make you successful in this division?
describe a time when you pursuaded a person/group?
Name a rcent piece of financial news and how this will in turn affect icap?

i think i did well...we will see

Was this for a summer internship position or grad position? I applied for the Summer Internship 2011 Business Services. My application is on hold after screening. Do you know if they have places left?

I just had mine for the accounting programme. Questions asked were:

why ICAP?
why IB market?
What is IB?
What are 3 of ICAP's products?
What is 7% of 7?
What is 3/8 as a decimal?
Who else have you applied for and why ICAP over them?
Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?
How would your team members describe you while working on a project together?
When have you been part of a team who had a task which resulted in a successful outcome and what was your contribution?

Some quirky questions, hesitated on 3/8's will have to wait and see!

Did you get the products question? I like completely blanked on the phone, though mine was worded what three derivatives do we sell?

Yeah but they meant in relation to their products... Its a simple question dont get me wrong, but it was 1 of those moments when i froze up. I had heavily researched ICAP (im going for a research pos) and it says you mainly work in the shipping area, and my knowledge of the shipping industry was v.good but they caught me off with that, i still gave ok answers just think its where i messed up.

I also had a phone interview for accounting recently as well, but for a placement year instead of a grad job.

Why ICAP?
What do you know about ICAP and what we do?
How have you prepared for this interview?
Why accounting? How are you suited for this role?
Where else you applied? Had any interviews/got any offers yet? Any interviews coming up?
What's 7% of 7?
1/16 as a decimal?
3/8 as a decimal?
How would others describe you when working in a team and the contribution you put forward?
Tell me a time you had to analyse something and the end result. Any questions?

The lady who interviewed me was really nice. It could have gone better, only time will tell! Good luck

Not really, they want you to do it without a calculator and to be able to explain how to do it. Some people wouldn't know without a calc!

Agreed I've seen / had far worse. People should know that 1/8 is 0.125. Something like a JS interview can be seriously tricky (what's the closest integer to the square root of 1430 for example)

Wait this is a telephone interview? Why on earth didn't you use a calculator?

You could do, but they still ask you how you got to your result, which you need to be able to explain in a logical manner.
